Matheson is delighted to launch its 2025 Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary, which honours late Matheson partner and former Chairperson, Tim Scanlon. Established since 2022, the bursary is delivered as part of Matheson's Impactful Business Programme and is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students.
As part of our commitment to developing exceptional talent and providing equal opportunity within the legal profession, the Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary presents students with a fantastic opportunity to receive mentoring opportunities, a piece of Irish art or craft, as well as financial support. The recipient of the Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary will receive:
- a bursary of €5,000;
- an internship placement in Matheson’s Corporate department; and
- in recognition of Tim’s passion for the arts, a piece of Irish art or craft in lieu of a bursary award trophy.

Tim was regarded as a pre-eminent lawyer, who was a mentor to his colleagues, and had a passion for driving innovative change in the legal sector. We are proud to honour Tim’s legacy through this bursary which provides students with the opportunity to combine their academic knowledge together with creative thinking. The bursary is also a tribute to Tim's interest in the arts and underlines Matheson's commitment to supporting the arts in society through our Impactful Business Programme initiatives. We look forward to seeing this years’ entries. “
Recipients of the Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary, since launch, include:
- 2022: Patrick Schofield, Dublin City University. Patrick’s essay entry focused on “Corporate donations to the arts and culture and the duty of directors to ‘act in good faith in what the director considers to be the interests of the company’. Is there a conflict?”. On receipt of the bursary in 2022, Patrick stated: “The bursary is a wonderful tribute to Tim Scanlon and his contribution to Matheson. I am extremely grateful as recipient of this award.”
- 2023: Éilis Murphy, University of Galway. Éilis’ entry looked at “Corporate responsibility and supply chains, discussing the impact of changes under EU Directives on Corporate Sustainability Reporting and Due Diligence.” Commenting on her achievement, Éilis stated: "I am delighted to be the recipient of this bursary that honours former Matheson partner Tim Scanlon. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that this bursary will give me."
- 2024: Benedict Taaffe, University of Limerick. Benedict’s award winning essay was on “The Impact of AI on Corporate Governance - Opportunities and Risks for Boards?”. On receipt of the award last year, Benedict said: “Winning the Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary has been inspiring for me, it is both an affirmation of the work I have done and a catalyst for my future aspirations. I would like to sincerely thank Matheson for this opportunity; the bursary and the many facets of Matheson's careers programme are a testament to their innovative, inclusive outlook.”
The Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary builds on our other student and graduate initiatives, including the Matheson Cara Scholarship; the Matheson Scholarship in Law Plus in association with the University of Limerick; and the First Step Programme. The firm also remodelled its Career First Programme, which is now exclusively dedicated to undergraduate students on university access schemes – the first of its kind to be offered by an Irish law firm.
Application Details
Applicants must submit an essay of 1,200 words (excluding footnotes of reasonable length and citations) discussing one of the following topic:
The impact of Brexit on corporate regulation in Ireland
a. Discuss how Irelands corporate regulatory landscape has been affected by the UKs departure from the EU.
Eligibility: Applicants must be based in a university, college of education, or equivalent third level institution on the island of Ireland.
