Matheson Launches Cara Scholarship

Services: Impactful Business Programme Date: 26/10/2021

Matheson has announced the 2021 launch of its Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship in association with Trinity College Dublin (TCD).  Renamed the Matheson Cara Scholarship, in honour of late Matheson partner, Cara O'Hagan, and delivered as part of Matheson's Impactful Business Programme, the scholarship is open to second-year undergraduate students in TCD, including students on the Higher Education Access Route or the Disability Access Route to Education schemes, mature students and students who face barriers in third level education.

The recipient of the Matheson Cara Scholarship will receive:

  • a place on Matheson’s Summer Internship Programme in June 2022;
  • a bursary of €5,000 for each academic year;
  • an assigned mentor from Matheson to support them during their university journey, and;
  • access to Matheson’s online library and online learning platform.

Michael Jackson, Managing Partner, Matheson, said; “The Matheson Cara Scholarship honours the memory of our late colleague and friend, Cara O’Hagan.  Cara spearheaded and led many of Matheson’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, and was a mentor and role model who embodied the firm’s values of partnership, respect and diversity.  This scholarship is now in its fourth year in association with Trinity College Dublin and we believe that renaming it will ensure that Cara’s passion for promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and her pride in her alma mater will continue to be remembered.”

Matheson is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where all colleagues and their contributions are valued and respected and to embedding diversity and inclusion into everything we do.  A key area of focus for Matheson’s Diversity and Inclusion commitment is to proactively address the issues of social mobility and equal opportunity within the legal profession.

Previous recipients of the Matheson Cara Scholarship in association with TCD commented;

Saba Malik (recipient in 2019) said, “The scholarship has levelled out the playing field and removed many obstacles that would have otherwise prevented me from accomplishing my goals and completing the course.  I am especially grateful for the advice I received from my mentor at various points in my journey through college.”

Niall Brennan (recipient in 2020) said, “The scholarship offers incredible support for students who face barriers in participating in third level legal education. It is an important way of ensuring better accessibility to careers in the legal field and creating a more diverse and inclusive environment.”

Moses Lynn (recipient in 2021) said, “I’m not afraid of hard work but a recognition of this effort helps.  This is why I am so appreciative of Matheson’s recognition of dyspraxia, considered by many to be a ‘hidden disability”.
